I chose the Typhoon Haiyan story for its relevance and its day-to-day updates.
Just like any other stories of natural disasters, there are many components to talk about. As such, I spoke of its passage from the Philippines to Vietnam and China, the relief effort, and the statistics of this crisis.
Haiyan is considered the most powerful storm to have ever hit land. As such, no modern government has ever had to deal with such mass destruction from a natural event. As the days went by, the lack of expertise in organizing efforts after such a disaster was easily discernible.
In fact, government officials are scrambling around trying their best to organize relief efforts with minimal electricity. As people starve, looting has also taken place. The environment of crisis has led to many different opinions, from people praising the government effort, to other criticizing the organization of the effort.
Thus, the multiple facets of this story makes it ideal for such an assignment. Different media will report different aspects in various ways and Storify is an ideal tool to bring all these different factors and visions into one clear flow of information.
I haven’t ever used Storify before and so I did not know of its potential. I realize that, just like with the mapping and liveblogging assignments, there are many great tools for journalists now. Journalists may have a more difficult and fast-paced job than ever before, but I realize with assignments such as these that they now also have many powerful tools to help them achieve their deadlines.
